Dan Tharp grew up in Northwest Indiana, home of heavy industry, steel mills and rust.
After earning a degree in Philosophy at Indiana University and Masters Degree in Anthropology and Religious Studies at Arizona State University, he returned to Indiana. After teaching school for five years, Dan completed a five year apprenticeship as a union sheet metal worker. Dan worked as a journeyman, designing huge systems for buildings in the Chicago area. A freak accident severely injured his right hand and brought him into the care of Dr. Susan Grace. After finishing hand therapy, their relationship solidified. Dan's dream to meld his artistic talents and exceptional welding skills waited on the back burner until Susan and Daniel moved to Arizona in 2005.
Dan transforms common steel tubing into a sleek, functional and durable piece of art. What may appear to be "modern" design is actually Dan's interpretation of late 1800s and 1920s Arts and Crafts, Stickley, and Frank Lloyd Wright's motifs. Dan carefully listens to the wishes of the client for whom he creates custom pieces worthy of legacy. He truly is living his dream designing, creating, and seeing his metal art delight others in Arizona and around the world.
